There was a burglary in a house. There was a policeman questioning the owner. As usual , many people had gathered outside the house to watch the proceedings. Now , this is a pretty common scene.I don't mean the theft , but people gathering to watch the proceedings. For example , if there is a minor road accident , you can see lots of people gathering to watch the verbal fight. Some may try to help and give first-aid , but many will just stand watching ( and maybe enjoying too ). Well , coming back to the theft , there were many neighbors seemingly interested. So, the landlady of the house starts crying out aloud , maybe in an attempt to gather more people ? I wonder.
The police guy is frustrated and asks for a list of the stolen items. So, she starts recollecting the usual stuff - cash , electornic items , jewellary. The police starts writing down. The landlady has by now gathered quite a big crowd , most of them within ear-sight.( That was eye-sight , i used the term for lack of anything appropriate to describe hearing distance.. is it called ear-shot ? ). During the recollection , its as if the distress has increased multi-fold. I think that maybe she is missing those jewels which bright she wore just the other day. Or is it due to the attention she is getting ? Well, the list goes on and the police has taken what all clues they can get and thus ends chapter 1 of this story.
After few days , the same police guy comes to the house. But now there is another man with him. He introduces as Income-Tax officer. Both talk to the landlord and the landlady. The Income-tax officer says that the list of valuables were much much beyond the declared income of their family and wanted to know how they had acquired that wealth ( which is now lost , btw )
The landlord sees the list and is also shocked that his wife had so much worth of jewels. On questioning , an embarassed wife says "How can i say that i had only the two bangles , earrings and the one necklace which you had bought me ? So , to keep up your respect infront of our neighbors I added the diamond necklaces and other dozen items."
The police guy is now furious. The Income-Tax guy is speechless. The husband is left wondering at the wisdom of his wife.

Part !!
Now , here comes what happens to the chor. This is written as Shri Manmohan ji ( not our PM ) was curious to know what happened to the chor in this story. So , just to continue the story and in an effort that you will not be bored , here goes ..
The chor was standing amongst the neighbors when the police guy was taking the list of the stolen items from the land lady. So , he heard the list and was taken by surprise. But what to do ? He could not say that the lady was lying. So , he thought he must have done some mistake and lost the other valuable stuff ( the diamond necklaces and dozen other jewellary ). He goes home and rechecks the stolen maal. He then tries to remember how he could have missed them. He recollects that as he was trying to get away from the burgled house , he had seen another locked almirah. Now , he wonders if that contained the other valuables and if another thief managed to get at them. So , he is very disappointed for not having done a good job.
In his disappointment and frustration , he is not able to sleep. He gets depressed. ( He still has not read my blog on "Combating Mild Depression").So , he doesnot know what to do.
He waits for a few days and keep watch at the house. One day, he sees the police guy and IT-officer meet the landlord and landlady. Now , he doesnt know the IT-officer and thinks that person to be the other chor. So , he follows the IT-officer and finds his home.
He plans another burglary at the IT-officers house the next night. To his surprise , he finds all the diamond necklaces and jewellary worth ten times more than what the land lady had listed. Now , he is very happy and can sleep peacefully. But , hang on , not for long ..
What happens next ? Please post your thoughts :)
Part III
Looks like many readers are not happy that the thief has gone scot-free even in the second part. He has committed two burglaries now and as per one of the readers comments "he is still at large". So here you go with the last part :
By now , the thief is very much happy about the huge amount of maal he got in his second theft. He plans to sell all of them and make money.
Meanwhile, the IT-officer is devastated at the theft. He has lost crores of rupees. He thinks about that wealth he had created. He realises that most of that were from illegal , corrupt means and not acquired by honest work. But still , maya is strong and he reports the case to police.
The police guy come to meet the IT-officer and take the list of stolen items. Now , this IT officer has a problem. He cannot officially declare all the items. It is the opposite condition of the first landlady. He cuts down the list and only declares few items which are permissable according to his income. The police guy takes the list , collects all the clues and strengthens his search for the thief.
After few weeks of searching , the police guy is successful in nabbing the thief when he was trying to sell the jewels. All the maal is recovered and the thief is sent to prison for his thefts. ( Now , most of the readers should be relieved that justice is done )
The police guy compares the stolen jewellary with the list he got from the IT-officer and the modified list form the landlady. He returns whatever both had claimed. The land lady is very happy that she has got back her jewellary. Her husband being a simple and honest guy tells his wife never to show-off in future. She agrees and both live happily.
The IT-officer is not happy as he has got back only a small fraction of what he had lost. He becomes a very miserable person always thinking of what he has lost.
The next day , there is an IT-raid at his house. They find only the amount and jewellary which was okay for his income. So, they don't get any evidence to prove that he is corrupt and go back and file a clean report. This IT-officer who was terrified in horror realises that he is saved in the nick of time. That day , he realises that all this was the play of God to teach him a lesson. He is a changed man now and becomes honest. He lives happily thanking God to have given him the chance.
The police guy gets promoted and is also happy. What happens to the rest of the stolen maal ? It gets added to the Government Treasury for proper utilization.
All's well that ends well ! Sarve janah sukhino bhavanthu !
