Is writing a forgotten art ?

With the advent of short messaging and WhatsApp , it seems to me that blogging and writing longer posts is becoming a forgotten art. Why the verbose explanation when you can send an emoji ? That maybe the thinking in general and is very much suited for the smart mobile world. But writing is an expression of self and its always a pleasure to experience the flow of thoughts that translate to words on paper. Writing is one of the small pleasures which I used to enjoy earlier. Sharing of emotions in words , expressions in meaning., the play of words within paragraphs , sometimes not so much in order , but it all adds up to the natural beauty of the Art which is Writing !

Back to Writing

Here is starting off 2020 with a post - BacktoWrting
This post is mostly for myself. As I have been away from writing for quite a long time now, I need this reminder that writing is still wonderful. Get back to it and let the words flow, even for a small time each day.

In our busy days, we forget to look at the small things which make us smile and feel wonderful about ourselves. One of these small things for me, is writing. I should take out time more regularly for writing. It does not matter if what I write is not read by anybody else apart from myself. Its of course good to have readers and write from a readers perspective. But ultimately , writing is for the self , not for the other self.

This makes me wonder, what is keeping me away from writing for a long time now. Is it the work pressures , less time to spare , no great ideas to write about ? Maybe its a combination of these factors. Well , whatever it was , lets hope that it stays in the past. I got started with this post and would continue to a bit of it every day.

Maths of Mantra

In my previous blog , we discussed about the mathematics of breathing and the basic concept of controlled breathing. In this blog, we shall see the mathematics behind reciting mantras.
First , let us take "Gayathri mantra". I suppose this requires no introduction and most of us are familiar with this mantra. It is said that one person should not recite the mantra more than 3000 times in a day. Well , what is the science behind that number 3000 ? To answer this , we need to first understand the relevance and the power of the mantras upon human body. The Gayathri is a very powerful mantra if practiced in sincere belief. The Gayathri is to be recited in the proper chandhas 3 sessions in a day , maximum of 1000 times per session. Why this maximum limit ?
If you study the Gayathri, its made of 24 aksharas, So please read the below simple calculation:

24 X 1000 times in one session = 24,000
24,000 X 3 sessions in a day  = 72,000

Our body is said to comprise of 72,000 nerves ( called as naadis ). This was well know to the ancient people and is also now scientifically proven. Reciting the mantra is like charging each of these nerves. Reciting the mantra for maximum 3000 charges the entire body comprising of 72,000 nerves. While recitation of the mantra is good , it has to be within this limit. Practicing beyond 3000 a day would overcharge the body and may lead to problems like frustration , depression , neglection of ones duties , impatience , anger , dejection with worldly affairs, etc. I hope that the reader can compare that to a bulb of x volts, if more voltage is supplied , the bulb cannot withstand the excess power and would burst. Similarly, the mantra is nothing but concentrated energy which affects positively if done within limits.
Similarly , the ashtakshara mantra is made of 8 aksharas.
8 X 9000 times in a day = 72,000
So, the ashtakshara can be repeated to a maximum of 9000 in a day. Or three times the Gayathri.
I hope to have shared the maths and science behind our beautiful and wonderful practices. If one tries to understand and then perform any sadhana it would become enjoyable. Instead of blindly following , let us seek to understand and then with that knowledge , perform the daily practices with belief.

Maths of Breathing

human being normally takes 4 seconds per breath. That is 2 seconds for incoming breath and 2 seconds for breathing out. This is normal and average breathing across humans. Taking this speed of breathing , if we calculate the lung capacity for breathing throughout a life span of 100 years, a human would have breathed as per below calculations :

4 seconds = 1 breath
1 minute = 15 breaths
1 hour =  900 breaths
day = 21600 breaths
1 year ( 365 days ) = 7884000 breaths
100 years = 788400000 breaths

So, in a day , normally we breathe 21,600 times. Or , the other way , for 21600 breathes we have taken 1 calendar day. Our body ages by 1 day. What if we slow the process and take 8 seconds per breath ? Then for same 21600 breathes , our body would take 2 calendar days. The body clock would still be 1 day , but the calendar would be 2 days. Hence , slow breathing can expand our internal body clock, thereby aging. Is this a possibility ? Well , this is the science behind our very own Pranayama or controlled breathing.

The end of world ? Naah !!

How many times people predict the end
Films are made , books are sold
People go crazy thinking alls gonna end
Its not gonna last , the Mayans seemd to say
Finally , the day is just as another
Perfect ,as the good Lord made it to be
The sun shone brightly , the wind is clear
The end is infact , nowhere near.
Mayans might have run out of their calendar
So what , go and buy it from a nearby bookstore.

Find the child inside you

Childhood is the most wonderful time for everyone. We often go back and think about it with nostalgia. For me , i have decided to relive it once again alongwith my son. Each and every day , I make it a point to become a child once again. Playing with my son makes me feel young again. The time spent together also helps to creat a special bond between us.  I feel sometimes that  I have just forgotten to grow up.

I know there ia a child inside me. It asks me to do the crazy things I did many decades back. It wants to play with mom and dad. It asks for sweets and ice-cream and makes a fuss to eat lunch and dinner. It wants to go out and enjoy the games with its friends. It doesnot want to do its home work. It is innocent and accepts whatever it is told by elders. It wants to believe in good things and there is no doubt in its mind.

After few years of growing up . this child enters its teenage and then becomes an adult. It is forced to do many things. Out of courtesy or out of force , it starts to change itself. It cultivates habits of proper communication , proper dressing ,proper table manners , proper this and proper that. All these are needed and essential for the growth of the child into adult. But this metamporphosis has its casualities too. In the process , the child looses its innocence. That is the biggest casuality. Clinging on that child-like innocence becomes diffcult as it grows up.

But all hope is not lost. The adult, at one point of time , makes up its mind to delve into itself and then , what does it find ? It just finds a child inside.

Ultimate spirituality is just identifying the child inside you. Go on , become a child today.

HAPPY CHILDREN'S DAY !
